Inside Lviv: Ukraine’s “Immortal City”

In Lviv, military funerals, civilian arms training, and beauty pageants happen side by side as residents strive to maintain a semblance of normalcy four years into the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has openly invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in talks to settle the prolonged war. He expressed concerns that the U.S. is currently focused on Iranian issues, suggesting it’s a mistake to wait for European conflicts to regain American attention.

“Ukraine seeks to end this war through direct engagement with you,” Zelensky stated. He mentioned that various countries, including Switzerland and Turkey, have the capability and willingness to host a peace conference, asserting that leaders often gather to address such critical issues.

Zelensky further emphasized the importance of involving Europe and the U.S. in the peace process, arguing that since the war is occurring in Europe, those with the capability to act as guarantors must be included. He believes that the participation of the U.S. could help establish a new security framework for the region.

In a development relating to U.S. politics, 18 House Republicans have diverged from President Trump, supporting an aid bill for Ukraine amidst a looming veto battle.

During his discussions, Zelensky indicated a willingness to agree to a ceasefire during negotiations, viewing it as a standard practice in such situations. He argued that achieving real silence could initiate meaningful dialogue and expressed hope for a genuine ceasefire rather than a superficial pause.

He also mentioned the possibility of a prisoner exchange, proposing that a complete exchange of war prisoners might serve as a constructive step toward ending the conflict.

Zelensky cautioned that, unless an internal resolution is reached within Russia to end hostilities, Ukraine will persist in its fight for survival. He highlighted the ongoing battle’s consequences for both Ukraine and Russia, hinting that change will arrive when Russia becomes weary of conflict.
