Zohran Mamdani describes ICE raids as ‘cruel and inhumane’ following protester attacks on federal agents.

Brooklyn Protests Against ICE Arrests

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani intervened during a protest against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after demonstrators tried to prevent the arrest of an undocumented immigrant accused of assault and drug possession. This event, reported by local media, took place recently in Brooklyn.

Mamdani, known for his socialist views, criticized the ICE raids, describing them as “cruel and inhumane.” He mentioned that he hadn’t seen the circulating videos of the protests but continued to express his stance on these operations, stating they do not contribute to public safety.

On Saturday evening, nine protesters were detained in Brooklyn’s Bushwick area following ICE’s arrest of Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian immigrant with previous assault and drug-related charges, as noted by the Department of Homeland Security.

In addition to Mamdani, other local leaders also criticized the ICE operation. Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso expressed his concern about ICE’s presence in the area. He urged residents to report sightings of ICE to the city’s hotline and praised the swift action of the protesters who voiced their opposition.

Democratic State Senator Julia Salazar echoed these sentiments, finding it troubling that numerous New York City police were present for what seemed to be a legitimate gathering of community members.

The Department of Homeland Security stated that Okeke allegedly resisted commands from ICE officers and attempted to strike an officer with his vehicle. He was reported to have acted belligerently and tried to physically confront ICE agents.

After his arrest, Okeke was taken for medical evaluation. However, he reportedly resisted during this evaluation, leading to some chaos. He had initially entered the U.S. on a tourist visa but had overstayed it, thus requiring him to leave by February 2024.

As protests unfolded outside the hospital where he was evaluated, the crowd confronted ICE agents, damaging vehicles and causing minor injuries to officers, according to reports from the DHS.

Councilmember Sandy Nurse was among the demonstrators and described the arrest as akin to “kidnapping.” She criticized ICE’s lack of transparency regarding those they detain and appreciated community members who mobilized against the agency.

Mamdani has previously stated his support for abolishing ICE, arguing that the agency has strayed from its intended purpose, creating fear instead of ensuring proper enforcement of immigration laws.

In total, eight of the nine arrested protesters faced charges including resisting arrest and obstruction of governmental administration, while one individual received a summons and was released.
