By taking legal action, individuals are stepping in where politicians seem hesitant: holding these large corporations accountable.
Last week, a jury in New Mexico ordered Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, to pay $375 million for endangering children. Just a day later, a Los Angeles jury found both Meta and Google accountable, awarding $6 million to a woman who claimed she became addicted to their platforms as a child.
While the figures can be, you know, a bit rounded, the surge in legal actions clearly sends a strong message. The public perception of these companies is definitely shifting.
Mark Lanier, the attorney representing the plaintiffs in Los Angeles, mentioned to FOX Business, “I think companies purposely build addictive features into their apps. They know that the more we engage, the more profit they make.” He specifically pointed out the allure of autoplay videos and algorithm-driven suggestions.
“So, is this the dawn of the end for social media as we know it?” queried the host of a UK podcast. It feels a little dramatic, honestly.
In the California case, a 20-year-old woman, KGM, argued that her addiction to features like “infinite scroll” started at a young age, leading to emotional struggles. She first accessed YouTube at age six and Instagram at nine, even though both require users to be at least 13.
During the trial, Zuckerberg faced questions regarding Meta’s decision to lift a temporary ban on beauty filters—something critics noted could be detrimental to young girls. He replied, “We didn’t think the evidence was strong enough to justify limiting people’s expression.”
Still, the outcome isn’t set in stone. It may be appealed. And with a conservative Supreme Court in the picture, one could easily envision a reversal.

The companies often cite Section 230 of the Communications Act of 1996, which shields them from being held liable for posts made by users. Current lawsuits, however, are focusing more on the design elements of platforms that encourage engagement.
The Wall Street Journal recently warned of potential misuse by legal professionals: “While it’s true that teen use of social media and smartphones has surged alongside rising mental health issues, attributing specific problems to these platforms is quite tricky.”
They further advised, “Trial lawyers will likely exploit the Los Angeles decision as a way to lure more plaintiffs, even using social media to boost their reach. Got issues? Scrolling through late on a Friday night? You might cash in by blaming billionaires for your woes.”
The U.S. Capitol Building, as a symbol of government oversight, stood tall at sunrise. But, realistically, parents need to take some responsibility, setting rules for their children.
It’s not surprising that Congress, reliant on campaign donations, seems absent from this crucial conversation.
The tactics of tech firms closely resemble those of Big Tobacco—once marketed to keep users hooked for life. Fortunately, while no one’s health is at stake in a traditional sense, the emotional toll of social media is a real concern.

The reality is these tech companies, once lauded, have significantly tarnished their reputations with their handling of children and other pressing matters over time.

Dina Powell McCormick, president of Meta, shared with Axios: “As a mother, this issue is incredibly personal to me. I see how hard our team works to eliminate harmful content and empower parents, and I’m committed to this focus every day.”
But, honestly, that’s not the whole solution. Her intentions seem genuine. Yet, if Meta truly made adjustments in its care for children, we wouldn’t be facing this legal predicament now.
