Significant Cocaine Seizure in Miami During World Cup Preparations
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Miami, Florida, seized 22 kilograms of cocaine hydrochloride, valued at approximately $1.5 million, at an air cargo facility. This operation is part of a broader effort to combat drug smuggling during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The initiative, known as Operation Striker Shield, aims to disrupt international drug trafficking networks and intercept illegal drugs during a time when a large influx of international visitors is anticipated in the U.S. for the World Cup.
At a warehouse near Miami International Airport, CBP inspected a package labeled as “music equipment.” The shipment originated from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and was destined for Delhi, India, according to a Wednesday statement from CBP.
Upon inspection, officers discovered eight pouches and four bricks of white powder concealed within four speakers and two amplifiers. A field test confirmed the substance to be cocaine hydrochloride.
The total weight of the seized drugs was 22.35 kilograms (49 pounds, 4 ounces), with an estimated street value of around $1.5 million, according to CBP’s statement.
“This significant seizure underscores CBP’s unwavering commitment to securing our borders and preventing dangerous narcotics from reaching communities both here and abroad,” stated Daniel Alonso, Director of Field Operations for CBP’s Miami and Tampa Field Office. “Operation Striker Shield, combined with the vigilance and expertise of our officers, is effectively disrupting transnational criminal organizations attempting to exploit legitimate trade routes. We will continue to leverage intelligence, advanced targeting, and officer intuition to interdict these illicit shipments.”
Following the seizure, the investigation has been turned over to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
Under the guidance of President Donald Trump and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, CBP remains dedicated to preventing illegal drugs from entering the country while also facilitating lawful trade and travel.
