Cocaine Trafficking Ring Involving Penn State Fraternities Uncovered

Prosecutors have announced the arrest of over a dozen individuals linked to a significant cocaine trafficking operation originating from two fraternities at Penn State University. They allege that pledged members were coerced into cutting, packaging, and selling drugs to fellow students.

A total of 14 individuals have faced charges in this multi-state human trafficking case, which involves some prominent figures connected to the fraternities. Among those charged are four current Penn State students, nine alumni, and one father.

Reports indicate that the Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon fraternities collaborated with drug suppliers from New York and Philadelphia, distributing cocaine primarily to students at Penn State.

Attorney General Dave emphasized the organized nature of the operation, describing it as a highly lucrative drug ring managed by fraternity leaders and their pledges. It appears, for some new members, being involved in cutting and packaging cocaine was part of their initiation into the fraternity culture.

During a recent press conference, officials pointed out that Agostino Abbatiello, a 24-year-old from Westbury, was identified as a significant figure in the drug network.

Abbatiello and Thomas Robinson, affiliated with Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon respectively, are accused of being key suppliers in this scheme. Investigations revealed that Abbatiello frequently traveled between Pennsylvania and New York, obtaining substantial cocaine shipments.

According to court documents, Abbatiello was distributing cocaine earlier this year. When he became aware that law enforcement was questioning individuals about the operation in Pennsylvania, he reportedly urged them to stay silent regarding his involvement.

The process of cutting and packaging cocaine predominantly took place in the off-campus residences of the Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternities before the drugs were sold to the student body.

Abbatiello, Robinson, and two others, Mohamed Hrajbi and Lars Zeepvat, are facing serious charges including conspiracy, corrupt organization, and profiting from illegal activities.

Additionally, another Long Island resident, Robert Zanora, is facing charges related to felony conspiracy and misuse of communication facilities.

Others implicated, such as Liam Smith, Michael Brogno, Caden Howe, and several others, have also been charged with misdemeanors.

In a more troubling note, Paul Robinson, Thomas’ father, is being charged with felony tampering and hindering apprehension for allegedly destroying evidence related to the case.

Penn State University has suspended Delta Upsilon pending an investigation, highlighting that Sigma Chi is not officially recognized by the institution and operates under different oversight.

Penn State’s Vice President for Student Affairs, Andrea Dauer, expressed strong dismay over the allegations. She stated, “We are appalled by these serious allegations against current and former students. Criminal activities, including hazing, have no place in our facilities. We always try to assist law enforcement and are committed to enhancing our efforts regarding health, safety, and education on hazing.”
