13-Year-Old Waiting In Drop-Off Line Reportedly Shoots Father In Car, Then Goes To School

13-Year-Old Arrested After Fatal Shooting of Father

Louisiana State Police have detained a 13-year-old boy in connection with the fatal shooting of his father during a drop-off at his school on Tuesday morning.

The Hammond Police Department reported that the incident took place around 7:39 a.m. near Tangipahoa Alternative School, following an argument between the boy and his father, whose names have not been released. According to reports, the boy expressed reluctance about attending school, prompting his father to decide to take him home instead.

During this exchange, a school resource officer reportedly heard gunfire as the boy’s father attempted to leave the drop-off line. Afterward, police stated the father accelerated, veered off the road, and crashed into a house, causing damage. Notably, a preschool-aged child was in the back seat during the shooting but was unharmed; a relative is now looking after this child.

Following the crash, the boy allegedly approached the school entrance armed. The Police Chief of Hammond, Edwin Bergeron Jr., mentioned that a school resource officer arrested and disarmed him shortly thereafter.

The school, which serves about 250 students, was placed on lockdown, although this measure was eventually lifted, according to local news sources. Bergeron Jr. indicated the entire situation unfolded within a minute of the initial radio call for help.

He also noted that the boy’s father sustained serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital, but is now stable.

The boy has been moved to the Florida Parish Juvenile Detention Center for processing. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.

Tangipahoa Alternative School, as part of its safety protocols, has two resource officers on duty and is equipped with metal detectors. Additionally, school officials stated that they conduct monthly live-fire training.
