Meeting Between Hakeem Jeffries and Zohran Mamdani Yields Uncertainty
On Friday, House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries met with Zohran Mamdani, a left-leaning candidate for mayor in New York City, for the first time following the primary. However, Mamdani left the meeting without any clear backing from Jeffries.
Jeffries described the hour-long discussion as “constructive,” although he didn’t specify whether he would support Mamdani’s campaign. A spokesperson for Jeffries remarked that the meetings were open and focused on community issues, touching upon affordability among other topics.
“We talked about several important matters, like public safety, rising anti-Semitism, gentrification, and the goal of retrieving homes in 2026,” Jeffries noted.
The meeting’s scheduling seems to reflect hesitance among established Democrats regarding supporting far-left candidates, despite Mamdani garnering backing from major unions. While Friday’s discussions didn’t yield immediate results, House leaders have not indicated any imminent support for Mamdani’s push to City Hall this November.
NYC Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani Facing Challenges
Mamdani isn’t only seeking support from Jeffries; he also awaits engagement from figures like Senator Chuck Schumer and Governor Kathy Hochul, who have yet to take a stance in the mayoral race. Meanwhile, Andrew Cuomo is considered a prominent contender trying to regain his political footing.
While Schumer is anticipated to meet with Mamdani soon, no specific dates have been established. Jeffries stated that they plan to regroup with other members of the New York City Council and community leaders for further discussions.
This week, Mamdani received a warm welcome from progressive Democrats in Washington, D.C., including notable supporters like Senators Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders.
