New York’s $2.2 Billion Tax Cut Initiative
New York is gearing up to provide around $2.2 billion in tax relief to its residents, leading many to speculate if they might soon be getting checks of up to $1,500.
On Tuesday, Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled the next phase of the New York School Tax Relief (STAR) program, designed to assist eligible homeowners and seniors with property tax relief across the state.
“The STAR Program is crucial for alleviating school tax burdens for millions of homeowners in New York. It’s fully operational now,” Hochul stated. “In these financially uncertain times, especially with the funding cuts being made by Republicans in Washington, my administration is actively reaching out to hundreds of thousands of homeowners to ensure they receive checks and credits that put money back into family budgets.”
Some homeowners have already benefited from tax exemptions earlier this year, while several others reside in places like New York City, Yonkers, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse.
Homeowners in areas with school tax deadlines in August or September can expect STAR benefits to start arriving in the coming weeks.
According to officials, most homeowners eligible for STAR Credit can look forward to checks between $350 and $600, while seniors who qualify for enhanced STAR Credit can receive between $700 to $1,500.
“The current administration in Washington is causing financial instability for many families throughout New York. However, we are working diligently to return money to households in the state. Through the STAR Program, over 3 million homeowners will benefit from $2.2 billion in tax relief,” Hochul added.
Eligibility for the STAR Program depends on various factors, such as property ownership and income. More information can be found on the State Department of Tax and Treasury website.
The amount of aid each recipient gets may vary depending on local school taxes and other factors related to the county of residence.
New Yorkers who receive STAR credits, whether via checks or direct deposits, can refer to the STAR Credit Delivery Schedule for more information.
Eligible homeowners are encouraged to register for the STAR Credit Direct Deposit through the Tax Department’s online service system, particularly via the Homeowner’s Interest Portal.
“Whether you’re a new homeowner or have been in your home for a while, please check our STAR Resources page and register to find out when your STAR credit or direct deposit will arrive,” stated Amanda Hiller, Chairman of New York State Tax and Finance.
