Trump Denies Ordering Colbert’s Show Cancellation, Critiques Other Hosts
Former President Donald Trump has pushed back against allegations that he was behind the cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s late-night show. However, he hinted that Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon could be next in line for similar fates.
Trump’s comments have provoked strong reactions from the left, particularly given the longstanding critiques Colbert has aimed at him over the years. Interestingly, the announcement of Colbert’s cancellation coincided with the parent company’s approval for a multimillion-dollar merger.
“These legacy shows are losing money without anyone noticing. People simply aren’t watching,” he remarked via social media, which caused a stir online.
He quipped, “Everyone thinks I’m entirely to blame for Stephen Colbert’s exit from CBS,” while also laughing it off.
There have been discussions about CBS experiencing financial failures related to its programming, though no confirmed losses have emerged to back up these claims. Yet, the narrative of declining viewership remains relevant among those supporting the cancellation.
Trump went further, stating, “Next up could be the less talented Jimmy Kimmel and then the very unstable Jimmy Fallon. The real question is, who will it be first?”
He added, “If you don’t adapt, you’ll always find yourself a victim. Colbert has become his own victim, and those two might just follow suit.”
While the entertainment community has expressed outrage over the political climate affecting shows, there are voices like Jay Leno’s warning that the genre is too steeped in politics.
Even some of Colbert’s supporters, like comedian Samantha Bee, conceded that his show is probably losing money for CBS. “These legacy shows are bleeding money without anyone realizing it,” she noted, identifying the core issue of dwindling viewership.
Bee also commented on the precarious nature of humor in relation to presidential politics, remarking, “When the US president has to give approval for a company merger, joking about him is a risky move.”
