Woman assaulted in Cincinnati returns home, attacker's family says anger is rooted in race

Violence in Cincinnati Leads to Outrage and Reflection

A woman, who suffered severe injuries in a brawl in Cincinnati, has returned to Russia following the incident. Reports indicate that the family of one of the attackers suggested public anger over the assault stems from the victim’s race, as she is white.

The victim, identified as Holly by local Ohio Senators, was knocked out during a chaotic scene that unfolded in the downtown area early Saturday morning. She was visibly injured, with black eyes and severe bruising.

Footage of the fight showed Holly being punched before blood flowed from her mouth while she lay helpless on the ground. It appears she was trying to assist someone involved in the brawl when she was struck.

After being hospitalized for her injuries, Holly returned to her home country, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the Cincinnati Police Department.

Authorities reported that among the five individuals arrested were bystanders who allegedly approached Holly and pushed her down during the melee.

Cincinnati policeman Bernie Blank commented on the situation, stating, “She just threw herself into a brawl on the street,” referring to one of the accused, 24-year-old Vernon.

Initial footage suggests a disparity in the attackers’ and victims’ demographics, with Holly, a white woman, being targeted by a group of black individuals during the early morning clash.

In the video, two victims were shown on the ground, enduring relentless punches and kicks.

Those arrested include Montianez Merriweather, 34, Jermaine Matthews, 39, and Vernon, facing charges of felony assault and riotous behavior. Police allege that Merriweather and Matthews planned the “ambush” attack.

Merriweather appeared in court on Thursday, where his family expressed that the incident has drawn heightened attention due, in part, to racial dynamics. “If it were an African American woman who was knocked out… we wouldn’t have experienced all of this,” Merriweather told reporters outside the courthouse.

While he expressed sympathy for Holly, he also pointed to his mixed-race family as evidence they were not racist.

Ohio Senator Bernard Moreno shared a heartbreaking image of Holly, highlighting the seriousness of her injuries. “When I watched the video, the images were very graphic and very scary,” he said, adding that all she wanted was to enjoy a night out with friends.
