A former McDonald’s employee has disclosed a secret menu item, urging people to show some understanding towards fast food workers.
During his time working at McDonald’s, Jamie Calder found that the seasonings used on burgers are actually quite delightful when added to nuggets and chicken dishes.
“The seasoning on the burger patties is fantastic for nuggets and chicken options,” he mentioned to Need to Know.
“I’d definitely recommend it, as long as it’s not too busy to make the request,” he added.
Another tip from Calder is to order through the app, which can save you time and money. He pointed out that “if you order via the app for pickup, they often start preparing your meal before you arrive—just make sure to check in when you’re nearby,” he explained.
Naturally, there are certain behaviors that can annoy employees, as Calder noted. “One of my biggest annoyances was people ordering ‘No Salt’ fries just to get fresh ones,” he remarked.
“After we stack the fries, we have to clean off all the salt from the fryer and make a new batch. Then, once we hand them over, they throw away two salt packets,” he elaborated. “It really disrupts the workflow and slows things down,” he confessed.
In addition to the irritating requests, he mentioned that rowdy kids can make the job even tougher.
“The worst customers are school-aged kids who make a mess in the dining area. They spray water guns at each other and throw sauce everywhere,” Calder recalled. “One of my worst moments was when someone blocked the bathroom sink with plastic bags, causing a flood.”
Perhaps some of the unruliness can be attributed to the late-night hours at McDonald’s.
Most locations are open until midnight in the summer, according to one company spokesperson. Many restaurants in the chain will abide by this, while those in places like airports and malls will operate during standard breakfast hours.
