Bowser Advocates for DC Statehood Amid Crime Concerns
On Monday, Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, pushed for statehood for the District of Columbia following President Trump’s recent announcement addressing crime in the capital. Trump’s measures included deploying the National Guard to help combat crime after a serious incident involving government officials who intervened to thwart a carjacking.
In her statement, Bowser emphasized that residents in DC find themselves in a unique circumstance regarding democracy. She highlighted the “Home Rules Charter,” which mandates that the mayor ensure services from the Metropolitan Police Department during emergencies, stating that they would adhere to the law under such conditions. The Chief of Police has already established high-level contacts with the federal government in light of the ongoing issues.
“It’s apparent that the President has shifted the powers he seeks from us via Attorney General Pam Bondi,” Bowser noted. She expressed a desire to meet with Bondi soon, reminding residents that their access to democracy feels uncertain. Bowser has long championed the full representation of the District of Columbia.
Per Article I of the Constitution, Congress maintains control over the capital. The 1973 “Home Rules” Act enables some local governance—but Congress can disapprove actions taken by the DC government.
The topic of crime in the District has gained traction following the tragic shooting of Eric Tarpinian Yachim, an intern for Kansas Republican Rep. Ron Estes, on June 30. A fact sheet released by the White House outlined the extent of crime in DC, reporting that there were 29,348 criminal incidents, which included 3,469 violent crimes. Among these were 1,026 assaults with deadly weapons, 2,113 robberies, and over 5,000 car thefts, placing DC fourth in the nation for homicide rates.
The White House also pointed out concerns regarding the Metropolitan Police Department’s handling of crime statistics, alleging they had manipulated data. A high-ranking officer has been suspended under these allegations.
