Schumer Criticizes Trump’s Police Expansion Plans
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed strong opposition when asked about President Donald Trump’s possible agreement to demands for increasing police presence in Washington, D.C. during an appearance on “Parnas’s Point of View” with Aaron Parnas.
Schumer was quite blunt, stating, “There’s no way,” in response to questions about the police expansion. He emphasized that Democrats will fiercely oppose Trump, noting that Congress must approve any such measure. “We’re fighting him tooth and nail… and not only are we not going to approve it, but there are also Republicans who disapprove,” Schumer added, highlighting the bipartisan resistance to Trump’s approach.
“This is just another distraction. He’s scared of Epstein,” Schumer continued, suggesting that Trump is allowing fear to guide his decisions. He expressed confidence in their resolve, stating, “We won’t back down on this.” This came as Trump confirmed his request for Congress to extend control over local police beyond the current 30 days set forth by the Home Rules Act.
Despite this push for extension, Trump warned that he could potentially extend the control himself by declaring a national emergency. He mentioned, “If it’s a national emergency, we can act without Congress. But we hope to reach out to Congress quickly, and I believe Republicans will support us nearly unanimously.” Trump insisted on the urgency of the situation and hinted at the possibility of needing to declare an emergency if necessary.
Last week, Trump announced his plans to tackle crime and homelessness in D.C. He mentioned deploying the National Guard along with federal law enforcement agencies to assist with these efforts.
Trump’s sweep against crime has already led to over 100 arrests since early August, including a significant number that occurred just on Tuesday. This effort stems from an executive order he issued establishing a task force focused on making D.C. safer and more appealing.
