Russia Claims Trump Discussions Aimed at Finding 'Long-Term' Solution for Ukraine

Russian Delegation Prepared for Alaska Summit

Yuri Ushakov, an aide to President Vladimir Putin, announced on Thursday that the details for the Alaska Summit between Putin and Donald Trump have been set. This summit is just around the corner.

The Kremlin’s team will include key figures such as Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Defense Minister Andrei Belusov, Finance Minister Anton Silanov, and Kiril Dmitriev, who leads the Russian Direct Investment Fund, alongside Ushakov himself. Quite the lineup, really.

Ushakov noted that the range of topics to be discussed isn’t that extensive. There are many sensitive issues on the agenda, which can make things complicated. The meeting will start with a private conversation between Trump and Putin, eventually leading into a joint press conference.

According to Ushakov, the discussions will particularly aim at achieving a lasting resolution to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. It seems to be a central theme. He emphasized that it should be clear to everyone that resolving the Ukraine situation is a primary focus, especially in light of discussions held in the Kremlin earlier this month.

Ushakov mentioned that while the agenda is primarily about Ukraine, they would also touch on other important matters relating to peace, security, and various pressing regional and global issues.

There’s a feeling of hope around this meeting, particularly in terms of advancing collaboration between the countries in trade and economic domains. He described current cooperation as enormous but unfortunately not fully realized.

Turning back to recent events, President Trump’s visit to Moscow earlier this month was framed as a crucial attempt to push forward negotiations before a deadline emerged concerning a contract aimed at reducing violence.

In addition to Putin, Trump will meet with Dmitriev, who manages a substantial sovereign wealth fund for Russia and has a significant role recognized by the White House. Dmitriev’s position has made him an informal envoy to the U.S., though recent sanctions by the Biden administration previously held him back from visiting.

Interestingly, similar sanctions had to be lifted temporarily to facilitate these Alaska talks, although they are set to expire soon unless extended.

Reports suggest that Trump may propose a minerals deal to Putin, and if a ceasefire is agreed upon, it could lead to reduced sanctions and access to Alaska’s natural resources for Russia. It sounds like there’s a lot to gain, or lose, depending on how things go.

Trump’s delegation is also likely to include Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent. Trump expressed hopes of arranging another meeting with Putin quickly, possibly including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky if the initial meeting goes smoothly.

As the summit approaches, Putin seems optimistic. He held a meeting with his advisories, discussing the progress in negotiations regarding Ukraine. He even praised Trump’s sincere efforts to bring an end to the crisis, which seems to resonate with many parties involved.

Putin has indicated that he would like to discuss NATO expansion concerns at the summit, along with the new nuclear weapons control treaty. It’s shaping up to be a pivotal event for U.S.-Russia relations.
