Federal Control of DC Police Announced by President Trump
President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington, D.C. is becoming safer, despite previous issues with crime, particularly as the city has recently been highlighted for high homicide rates.
Interestingly, reports emerged regarding the clearing of three significant homeless encampments without incident.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed skepticism about local officials, suggesting they have historically exaggerated crime statistics to create a misleading sense of security.
“This is quite concerning, and there are serious investigations underway. Just a few days ago, D.C. was considered one of the least safe cities in America. Now, perhaps soon, it could be among the safest, and every hour seems to improve!” he remarked.
His announcement came in the wake of a decision to place the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) under temporary federal control and deploy the National Guard to combat crime in the capital.
This action has triggered legal challenges, with the DC Attorney General filing a lawsuit against what they see as a violation of the Home Rules Act. Local leaders, including Mayor Muriel Bowser, are similarly questioning the legality and necessity of this federal intervention.
As a result of the crackdown, nearly 400 individuals have been arrested, including 135 undocumented immigrants and 21 firearms confiscated, marking a significant development by Monday. The MPD union president lauded the federal response as a necessary step in addressing rampant crime, but he advocated for a temporary measure.
“President Trump has a point; we cannot let crime undermine the integrity of our nation’s capital,” stated House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Press Secretary Caroline Levitt emphasized the administration’s commitment to “aggressively pursuing and apprehending all violent offenders.”
Out of the arrested individuals, the White House identified that 135 had prior criminal backgrounds involving violent offenses or gang affiliations.
On a notable recent Friday, a collaborative law enforcement operation yielded 52 arrests, with 28 being illegal immigrants and three firearms seized.
“We face various threats to public safety. We are actively removing illegal weapons linked to a record number of violent offenders, which have posed risks to the residents of this city,” was another commentary reflecting current concerns.
Additionally, over 70 homeless encampments have been dismantled in efforts to restore cleanliness to public roads and areas.
Attorney General Pam Bondy, who supports the legal framework underpinning Trump’s crime offensive, remarked on social media about the enhanced public safety measures in D.C.
“Thanks to law enforcement efforts, Washington, D.C. is becoming safer each night. This weekend alone saw 137 arrests and the seizure of 21 illegal firearms,” Bondy stated.
