Calls for Change in the “James Bond” Series
A prominent actress in the film industry believes it might be time for progressive writers to step away from the “James Bond” series.
For some time now, critics have been speculating about the possibility of transforming this iconic male character into a feminist version or even having the role entirely played by a woman.
Pierce Brosnan, who portrayed the character in four films from 1995 to 2002, has previously suggested that a female presence would bring an “exhilarating” element to the series. He once remarked, “I’ll put a man out of the way, and a woman there,” back in September 2019.
Yet, Brosnan’s own co-stars now express their views, asserting that the character should remain male. One co-star commented, “James Bond must be James Bond, otherwise it will be something else.”
During an interview while promoting the film “The Thursday Murder Club,” Brosnan reflected on the significance of the Bond character in today’s context.
However, the spotlight turned to his co-star, Helen Mirren, who also took a stance on the subject. At 80 years old, she plays a retired spy in her latest movie and was asked by Outlet Saga whether a female spy paints a more accurate picture of the espionage world compared to 007.
Mirren responded, “So many women have worked in that world. She is a manifestation of reality. That’s certainly true. It’s more realistic. But it’s not as fun as Bond! I’m very feminist, but James Bond has to be a guy. You can’t have a woman. That won’t work.”
She further emphasized that changing Bond into a woman would fundamentally alter the franchise.
“James Bond must be James Bond, otherwise it will be something else,” declared Mirren.
Interestingly, Brosnan seems to have moderated his earlier stance, expressing excitement about the “next guy” who will take up the role. “I adore the James Bond world, and that was very good for me,” he stated, noting he’s now more of an observer enjoying the series. “It’s a gift that keeps giving.”
Despite this shift in Brosnan’s viewpoint, the franchise’s creators are less accommodating regarding discussions about Bond’s gender. Just months after Brosnan’s comments, producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson dismissed the idea of altering Bond’s gender.
Broccoli stated definitively, “He’s any color, but he’s a man” in December 2019.
The series underwent a significant transition with “No Time To Die” in 2021, marking Daniel Craig’s last outing as Bond. During the film, actress Lashana Lynch took on the 007 title in Bond’s absence, creating a twist where technically, 007 was a woman, though not embodying Bond’s classic persona.
