Pope Leo XIV Embraces Change at the Vatican

Pope Leo XIV is making headlines with his unexpected shift in living arrangements. Reports indicate that he will be moving into a newly updated apartment at the Vatican, and—here’s the twist—he’s bringing along four roommates.

This new apartment has seen significant renovations, marking a refreshing departure from the traditional solitary lifestyle previously adopted by popes. It’s quite a notable shift, really. Vatican correspondent Iacopo Scalamazzi shared his thoughts, noting that this is a departure from historical norms, particularly in modern times.

Among those joining Leo in his new living situation is Father Edgard Limikna, his trusted personal assistant from Peru. They have a close bond, having formed a friendship during Leo’s earlier years in South America. It’s kind of nice to see companionship being highlighted in that way.

“In my view, Leo is different from Francis, but not in a drastic sense,” Scalamazzi added. “He’s going back to the Pope’s apartment, but it’s clear he’s not trying to be a monarch.”

This arrangement embraces the values of the Augustinian community, which Leo belongs to, promoting a spirit of fellowship. It’s interesting to note that Pope Francis, upon his appointment in 2013, opted for living in a guesthouse instead, steering clear of the traditional papal apartment.

The Apostles Palace, where Leo’s apartment is located, has a rich history dating back to the 15th century. It includes not just living quarters but also an office, a museum, and even the Sistine Chapel!

According to various reports, renovations for the apartment have been ongoing, focusing on repairs for moisture issues and restoring the suite’s elegance after years of neglect.

Interestingly, after the passing of Pope Francis in April, the apartment was ceremonially sealed to allow for these renovations. Leo has, until now, been living in a nearby building, but it seems he’s ready for this new chapter.

Leo XIV isn’t just about personal change, either; he aims to inspire young Catholics. In 2025, he spoke to over a million at a gathering of the Roman Catholic faith, encouraging them to stay grounded and maintain humility.

His approach to leadership is steeped in a desire to avoid the pitfalls of aloofness. He has emphasized that bishops should reflect humility and connection rather than a distant royal demeanor.

Responses to Leo’s new lifestyle have been varied on social media. It seems people have mixed feelings, and it’s quite fascinating to see how quickly opinions can shift—perhaps that’s just part of being human.

This change is a reminder that even within such a historic institution, there is room for evolution.
