Brooklyn public defender dismissed for aggressive social media comment regarding Israelis

The defending attorney from the Brooklyn Defender Service has been dismissed due to a troubling social media post that seemed to promote violence against Israel. The Brooklyn Defender Service is a public defense organization in New York City. Although it shares the same acronym as the anti-Israel movement calling for boycotts, divestment, and sanctions, it is not affiliated with that movement.

Lucas Gomez, the attorney in question, reacted to a comment that asked whether one would “take seven million Israelis with you.” A spokesman for the watchdog group Stopantisemitism informed Fox News Digital about employee concerns regarding Gomez’s post, which suggested the formation of a “shooting squad.” The group emphasized that this kind of violent language is unacceptable among legal professionals.

They went so far as to claim that Gomez’s legal license should be revoked. When contacted for a comment, Gomez expressed remorse, attributing his comments to “misplaced feelings” regarding the situation in Gaza.

He said, “I want to sincerely apologize for my post. It was inappropriate and offensive. This came from misguided feelings about the ongoing situation in Palestine, fueled by the distressing images I see daily. It was a serious lapse in judgment.” Gomez emphasized that his post does not reflect his true character or that of the Brooklyn Defender Service.

In an official statement, the Brooklyn Defender Service condemned Gomez’s remarks and announced his termination. BDS Executive Director Lisa Schribalsdorf remarked that Gomez’s comments undermined the organization’s mission and values, calling them a “hateful statement” that contradicts the advocacy for justice and kindness that BDS pursues.

Schribalsdorf noted that these kinds of posts cast a shadow on the reputation of the entire public defender community, stating, “Lucas Gomez has traumatized the reputation of the Brooklyn Defender Services and each of our dedicated public defenders.”

A spokesperson for Stopantisemitism mentioned that anti-Semitism has surged since Hamas’s attack on October 7, describing the current environment as shockingly open and normalized in a way we can no longer overlook.

Interestingly, earlier this year, another public defender was criticized for their actions, which included tearing down a hostage poster. This incident also garnered attention, resulting in a resignation from the involved party.
