DNC Labels Trump's Crime Initiative in DC as a 'Political Risk' After the Area Experiences 12 Days Without Murders

DC Crime Policies Spark Debate Among Democrats

Despite Washington, DC experiencing a 12-day period without any murders, some Democratic leaders have pointed fingers at President Donald Trump’s crime policies, suggesting that the increased federal presence is a “political responsibility” of the Republican Party.

During a summer meeting of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), a presentation encouraged Democrats to oppose federal measures like the deployment of National Guard units, arguing such actions wouldn’t enhance safety for Americans. This discussion arose as law enforcement has arrest figures exceeding 1,000 and has taken over 110 firearms off the streets since mid-August, leading to a notable reduction in crime in the district.

“It’s not just about seizing power; it’s about what they can manage,” commented Insha Rahman, director of Vera Action, after remarks from DNC Chairman Ken Martin and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. “The harsh crime rhetoric has typically been viewed by Democrats as a win for Republicans, but right now, it’s their responsibility.”

Rahman emphasized the need for Democrats to assert ownership over public safety amid concerns of what she described as an “unconstitutional takeover” of the city.

There are underlying dynamics at play, as recent public opinion suggests that while some favor tougher crime approaches, a significant portion of the population supports funding initiatives aimed at creating safer communities through mental health and addiction services.

Interestingly, a May 2025 YouGov survey revealed that only 40% of participants endorsed a strict law enforcement-centric approach. In contrast, 60% favored fully funding programs they believed would genuinely contribute to community safety.

This research commissioned by Vera Action indicated a preference among voters for addressing fundamental issues leading to crime rather than merely punitive measures. Rahman expressed a clear desire for Democrats to back proposals that tackle these root causes through investments in education, mental health, and affordable housing.

“There’s a common belief around crime that strict policies are what voters want when they’re concerned. But that’s not really the case,” Rahman stated. “People want to see solutions to the deeper issues that affect safety and security.”

Polling data has shown that voters tend to trust Republicans over Democrats on matters of crime and policing, with a notable gap of 13 points. It’s worth noting that this current period is the longest streak without a murder in the district since January 2020.

As the debate unfolds, responses from the DNC and VERA Action were not immediately available.
