National Guard Deployment in D.C. Sparks Controversy
President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard in Washington, D.C., due to rising crime rates has drawn criticism, particularly from left-leaning commentators. Recently, another man has been charged with a felony for allegedly assaulting a soldier on patrol in the area.
Scott J. Pichon, a 33-year-old attorney from Maryland, commented, “President Trump is cleaning it up.” Pichon was arrested and charged with felony assault after allegedly spitting on two guards from the South Carolina State Guard who were on duty outside Union Station.
According to Amtrak Police Sergeant Robert Underwood, Pichon was observed making noises akin to coughing and then spitting a combination of saliva and mucus toward the soldiers. One member of the National Guard was reportedly struck in the face, while the other was hit in the neck.
Pichon appeared in court on Tuesday, where he was released on his own recognizance with no objections from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
This incident marks the second arrest in recent weeks involving an attack on federal officials stationed in D.C. for Trump’s crime reduction efforts. Earlier this month, Shawn Charles Dan, a 37-year-old local resident, was charged with throwing a subway sandwich at a federal officer.
Since the increase in law enforcement presence in D.C., arrests have surged, totaling 1,094, along with the seizure of 155 illegal firearms, as announced on Tuesday. One government official stated, “It’s not just a carjacking once a week or more. We’ll continue to fight and fight to ensure that the people in D.C. are safe,” reiterating Trump’s commitment to enhancing safety in the city.
