Riots Erupt in Lausanne Following Fatal Incident Involving Police

This week, Lausanne, a city in Switzerland, experienced significant unrest after the death of an immigrant from Gambia who was trying to evade police on a stolen motorcycle.

Since Sunday and continuing into early Tuesday, groups of young people have been causing chaos—setting fires, throwing Molotov cocktails, vandalizing buses, and constructing barricades from debris in the streets. Reports suggest that they also targeted police officers with stones and other projectiles.

In response, law enforcement used tear gas, rubber bullets, and water cannons to control the crowds, which numbered in the hundreds. Police also had to safeguard firefighters who were attempting to extinguish fires ignited by rioters.

It appears that many involved in the riots were not local residents but had come from nearby Geneva. Lausanne itself is quite multicultural, with around 40% of its population having been born abroad.

The unrest was sparked by the death of “Marvin M,” a 17-year-old who had recently gained Swiss citizenship. He tragically lost control of his scooter while fleeing police and crashed into a garage door early Sunday morning.

While some in the community criticized the police regarding his death, there are claims that the motorcycle pursuit was comparatively distant, around 100 meters behind him. Regardless, approximately 200 demonstrators took to the streets, protesting what they perceived as police involvement in Marvin’s death.

Among those attacked during the riots was Thibaut Schaller, a member of the Swiss People’s Party and a security worker. Schaller described encountering a crowd of around 50 to 100 rioters, alongside a small group of white individuals. He seemed to recognize their presence as provocative, noting that one person called him a Nazi and urged him to leave.

Fortunately for Schaller, the police managed to disperse the crowd, allowing him to escape without serious injury.

The events in Lausanne mirror riots that erupted in France earlier this year after the death of a 17-year-old Algerian youth trying to evade police. That unrest resulted in widespread damage to vehicles and buildings, totaling hundreds of millions in losses. The tensions in France spilled over into Switzerland, as young people attacked police and vandalized businesses during this week’s riots.
