Medvedev Faces Major Fines After Outburst

Daniil Medvedev, the former world No. 1 in tennis, is facing hefty fines totaling $42,500 for his behavior during a recent tournament. This came after a dramatic incident in the first round of the competition over the weekend. Medvedev was penalized $30,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct and another $12,500 for racket abuse.

The fines were a result of an intense argument with umpire Greg Allensworth during the match. This dispute erupted in the third set, contributing to Medvedev’s increasingly agitated demeanor on the court.

During a pivotal moment, after French player Benjamin Bonzi missed his initial serve, a photographer approached the court, prompting Allensworth to ask the photographer to move out of the way and grant Bonzi another serve. The crowd responded negatively, booing Medvedev, who, in his characteristic style, blew kisses back at the fans.

Despite winning a set, Medvedev ultimately lost the match with a final score of 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 0-6, 6-4. Post-match, he defended his actions, arguing that the photographer’s presence wasn’t significant enough to warrant the additional serve Bonzi received. Surprisingly, he seemed to anticipate the fines, saying, “I’m big enough, so if I talk, I’m in big trouble, so I’m not going to talk.”

Medvedev isn’t new to controversies like this, especially at the US Open. Back in 2019, he had a memorable exchange with fans in which he sarcastically thanked them for their booing, claiming their energy had propelled him to victory. “Everyone, your energy gave me victory. If you weren’t here… I was so tired,” he remarked during that match.
