Woman Arrested for Assaulting Border Patrol Agent in Maine

Officials report that a woman has been taken into custody for allegedly attempting to assist a U.S. Border Patrol agent during the arrest of two undocumented immigrants in Maine.

Olivia Wilkins, 24, faces multiple charges including aggravated recklessness, use of dangerous weapons, endangerment, obstructing governmental administration, and failing to comply with law enforcement, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Border Patrol agents were providing support to the Maine State Police and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office in response to a commercial vehicle rollover accident involving two individuals, Joanne Andres Ortiz Calderon and Victor Hugo Cardona Calderon.

Authorities indicate that Ortiz-Calderon had received a final removal order from an immigration judge, while Cardona-Calderon continued his visa process but had not secured a work permit.

As the two men were being escorted to a Border Patrol vehicle, Wilkins began yelling at the authorities, according to the DHS. She reportedly drove her vehicle towards a group of law enforcement officers, swerving and nearly hitting them.

Sheriff’s deputies pursued Wilkins, and she eventually crashed her vehicle on the roadside, being apprehended at the scene.

This incident follows a string of recent attacks against immigration officials. Just two weeks earlier, a threatening letter had been sent to an ICE office in New York City. Furthermore, a man in San Francisco was charged with assault after attacking an ICE officer, and there was a bomb threat at an ICE facility in Dallas.

A spokesperson noted that such violence has surged amid a climate of hostility fueled by public discourse comparing law enforcement to oppressive regimes. “These rhetorical attacks have fostered a culture of hatred towards law enforcement, leading to a staggering increase in assaults,” they remarked, urging politicians and activists to temper their rhetoric.
