Woman Arrested for Interfering with Border Patrol in Maine

A woman has been taken into custody for allegedly trying to assist a U.S. Border Patrol agent during the apprehension of two undocumented immigrants in Maine.

Olivia Wilkins, 24, faces several charges including aggravated recklessness, making threats with a weapon, endangerment, obstructing a government operation, and failing to comply with law enforcement, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The Border Patrol was responding to a commercial vehicle rollover incident on Monday, working alongside Maine State Police and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. The two individuals involved, Joanne Andres Ortiz Calderon and Victor Hugo Cardona Calderon, had legal issues regarding their immigration status, with Ortiz-Calderon under an order for removal and Cardona-Calderon lacking a work permit.

As authorities were escorting both men to a Border Patrol vehicle, Wilkins, who was nearby, started verbally confronting the officers. Reports indicate that she drove her vehicle toward the law enforcement group, making a dangerous maneuver that nearly resulted in a collision.

Deputies pursued Wilkins, who eventually crashed her car on the roadside and was arrested.

This incident occurs just two weeks after a threatening letter was sent to an ICE office in New York City. Additionally, a violent incident was reported in San Francisco where an individual was charged with assaulting an ICE officer, along with a bomb threat at the Dallas ICE Facility.

Officials noted that these events follow a troubling trend in which immigration enforcement agents have faced increased hostility and violence, with a reported 1,000% rise in assaults on these officers. They suggest that the heated rhetoric surrounding immigration enforcement from certain activists, politicians, and media outlets contributes to this dangerous atmosphere.

The Trump administration emphasized the need for more respectful discourse to curb the growing animosity toward law enforcement personnel.
