Inside the Facebook Group Keeping Locals Informed About Immigration Enforcement in DC

As the Trump administration intensifies its crackdown in Washington, DC, a Spanish-language Facebook group is actively documenting federal immigration enforcement actions in the area.

President Donald Trump recently highlighted a decline in crime, coinciding with federal law enforcement’s increased presence in the capital since early August, which has compelled local police to collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). While ICE agents appear to be feeling some apprehension in the region, the Facebook group DMV Noticias has been consistently sharing reported sightings of immigration agents.

DMV Noticias, roughly translating to “DMV News,” serves as a platform for user-generated content, offering videos and images submitted by community members. It focuses on the DC metropolitan area, including Maryland and Virginia. There are plans to launch a Spanish-language website with occasional posts on current events and traffic incidents.

A DHS official mentioned that their ICE enforcement agencies have experienced over a 1,000% increase in assaults, and noted that individuals had even created a website to expose the identities of ICE officers. “We will take legal action against those who dox ICE agents,” the official stated. Further emphasizing their position, they said, “If you obstruct or assault our law enforcement, we will pursue legal action to the fullest extent.”

Attempts to reach the DMV Noticias email for comments went unanswered, and calls to the group’s listed phone number received no response.

Local Facebook groups are also highlighting federal immigration initiatives. On a recent Friday, messages from the group shared images of noticeable Border Patrol activity, including arrests around the 14th Street area and near Rhode Island Metro Station, with mentions of specific interactions involving young individuals.

The Facebook group has gained substantial traction, amassing around 200,000 followers and documenting a significant number of local immigration enforcement efforts—over 20 related posts were counted within just 24 hours by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Describing itself, DMV Noticias states it covers “news, celebrity gossip, and happenings within the DMV area and beyond.” Their activity coincides with an uptick in law enforcement authority in Washington, DC, following Attorney General Pam Bondy’s executive order mandating police to fully cooperate with ICE and federal immigration authorities.

To combat crime in the city, the Trump administration has deployed hundreds of National Guard members and federal law enforcement officials. These measures seem to be yielding results, as crime reports indicated a substantial drop. There was a 21% decrease projected for 2024 and a 33% reduction noted for 2023, when comparing the same period year-over-year.

Earlier last month, Todd Lyons, the acting ICE director, criticized a viral app named Ice Block, alleging it was hindering law enforcement efforts. The Department of Homeland Security echoed this sentiment, insisting they would not hesitate to arrest individuals interfering with enforcement operations.
