Concerns About Vaccine Misinformation Lead Joe Kennedy III to Call for Uncle’s Resignation
Joe Kennedy III, a former Congressman from Massachusetts, urged his uncle, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., to resign due to worries surrounding vaccine misinformation and criticisms of public health officials. In a post on Friday, he expressed that “Robert Kennedy Jr. poses a risk to the health and welfare of all Americans.” The Secretary’s role is to safeguard public health, he emphasized.
In his remarks following a hearing, Joe accused his uncle of disregarding scientific evidence and misleading the public. He specifically criticized Robert’s dismissal of expert opinions during his appearance before the Senate Treasury Committee.
During that session, Robert Kennedy mentioned limiting vaccine access and even removed former CDC director Susan Monares from the discussion. He stated that anyone wanting a Covid-19 vaccine still had opportunities to obtain one, even in light of the FDA’s revised guidance for individuals under 65 with at least one underlying health issue.
Prior to the hearing, 11 of the 12 Democrats on the committee called for his resignation. Public health organizations have expressed concern about Kennedy’s skepticism regarding vaccines, which diverges from the established scientific consensus.
Reflecting on the personal toll of illness, Joe stated that “the heartbreak of seeing a loved one fall sick doesn’t recognize borders,” highlighting the universal struggle with health issues. He indicated that the values needed for effective public health are absent from his uncle’s office and therefore demanded his resignation.
Additionally, last week, four senior officials from the CDC resigned in response to what Robert described as the “Weaponization of Public Health.” He insisted that CDC science should remain unfiltered and not politically influenced; vaccines are crucial for saving lives—a claim he believes to be indisputable.
During the hearing, three GOP senators raised their concerns about Robert Kennedy. Nonetheless, the President reiterated his support for the Health Secretary later that evening. He stated, “I appreciate different perspectives, especially when it comes to medical care and vaccines,” emphasizing the importance of diverse views in tackling health issues.
