In Charlotte, a Ukrainian refugee’s family is grappling with yet another tragedy as they sought safety from war in the U.S., only to face unimaginable loss. Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old, was laid to rest in Charlotte on August 27 after being unable to escape Ukraine. Her father, bound by his age and forced to stay in the country as the conflict escalated, insisted she remain behind.
“He had to go back. He didn’t come for the funeral,” a neighbor of the Zarutska family shared.
The young woman lost her life on August 22. She was riding a light rail train home from work when an unsettling incident occurred; surveillance footage captured a man behind her attacking her with a knife.
The suspect, DeCarlos Brown Jr., 34, has a criminal history, with at least 14 previous arrests for violent acts.
This horrific event has deeply affected Zarutska’s family, who fled to the U.S. to escape violence in Ukraine.
“She was sweet. Everyone in the neighborhood loved her,” the neighbor added. “She was always helping out and had such a good heart.” A heartfelt obituary described Iryna as a talented artist with aspirations of becoming a veterinarian assistant.
“She shared her creativity and created beautiful artwork for her family and friends, loving unique clothing designs that showcased her vibrant spirit,” it stated. “Iryna will be remembered for her kindness and creativity, leaving a profound impact on everyone she met.”
Her tragic murder has stirred frustration over the lack of coverage and a recent statement from Charlotte’s Mayor, who called for “compassion” towards the perpetrator.
“This tragic situation highlights issues surrounding our social safety net and mental health care systems,” Mayor Lyles commented, emphasizing the need for better treatment for individuals facing mental health challenges.
Brown has been charged with murder but has a checkered past, including a five-year prison stint for armed robbery in 2014 and another arrest for an attack on his sister in 2020.
Interestingly, he was recently out on bail after being arrested in January for misusing the 911 system, a circumstance that neighbors view as a failure in the system.
“It’s shocking,” one neighbor remarked. “The mayor’s first comments were more focused on the attacker rather than acknowledging the victim.” Another added, “It’s just… unbelievable.”
