Drugstores Prepare for Covid-19 Vaccine This Fall

Drugstores are gearing up to provide the latest Covid-19 vaccine this fall, and it seems insurance companies will still cover the costs, even if major health organizations don’t necessarily recommend it anymore.

On Friday, a vaccine advisor appointed by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. refrained from endorsing the shots specifically. Instead, the advisor suggested that individuals should make personal choices about getting vaccinated.

Typically, the recommendations from advisors to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) need approval from the agency’s director, but they are generally accepted.

These recommendations usually lead to insurance coverage and enable drugstores across many states to administer vaccinations. However, officials and insurance representatives have indicated that coverage will remain in place, with certain states allowing access to vaccines at pharmacies—the usual go-to for shots.

As summer turns to fall, many will likely look to get vaccinated to shield themselves from a potential winter surge in cases.

Will Insurance Cover Covid Shots?

It’s expected that insurance coverage will continue, but it’s wise for individuals to verify their specific plans.

The Health and Human Services Department noted on Friday that the committee’s decision would “provide vaccinations through all payment mechanisms.” This includes Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, private insurance sold on the health market, and a federal vaccine program that covers a significant portion of childhood vaccinations in the U.S. each year.

The Vaccines for Children program usually automatically covers vaccines suggested by the CDC committee.

The trade organization representing health insurance plans in America asserted that members would maintain free coverage for the shots until 2026.

This group comprises nearly all major insurance companies, with UnitedHealthcare being the exception. They also stated that vaccines would continue to be covered under standard commercial insurance plans, including those for individuals and small businesses.

It’s worth noting that large employers offering insurance will make their own judgments regarding vaccine coverage. They might choose to keep it, as vaccines can help avoid costly hospital bills for severe Covid-19 cases.

Where to Get Vaccinated

CDC data indicates that around two-thirds of adults receive Covid-19 vaccinations at pharmacies, while about 30% go to their doctors’ offices.

Access to vaccines has improved following a rocky start to the vaccination season. This led some individuals to travel to other states when their local pharmacies faced shortages.

According to major drugstore chains like CVS, they have the latest vaccines ready, with all 50 states now able to provide vaccinations, although some areas like Washington D.C. do require a prescription.

Walgreens also mentioned that prescriptions are needed in certain states.

Who Can Get a Covid Shot This Fall?

So far, the U.S. has recommended Covid-19 vaccinations annually for all individuals over six months old.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved shots for everyone over 65, and for younger adults and kids who are at a higher risk of severe Covid-19 infections.

The CDC maintains a lengthy list of conditions that heighten someone’s risk, such as asthma, cancer, and obesity. However, this list isn’t exhaustive.

Individuals can discuss with their doctor whether they are considered high-risk, even if they don’t meet the criteria on the list.

Representatives from CVS and Walgreens indicated that their staff will inquire about any risk factors for patients under 65, without requiring proof.

The message seems clear: If a patient believes they’re eligible and wants the vaccine, it’s a straightforward process.
