Mamdani commits to investing another $100 million for free legal aid for migrants at risk of deportation.

Mamdani commits to investing another $100 million for free legal aid for migrants at risk of deportation.

Taxpayers are facing a hefty additional cost of $100 million, which Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is highlighting as a key part of his platform to support illegal immigrants at risk of deportation.

He points out, “40,000 of our residents are currently at urgent risk of deportation,” during an appearance on MSNBC’s The Weekend, noting that last year fewer than 200 individuals accessed free legal help.

The city’s 2026 budget, which was approved in June, already allocates $54.5 million to address court deportation orders funded by taxpayers. Mayor Eric Adams remarked that this is “more than any other big city in America.”

Mamdani intends to substantially increase funding beyond the existing amount, reiterating a commitment outlined in his campaign platform under what he calls the “NYC Prevention of Trump” doctrine.

“Our campaign’s cornerstone is to raise funding for legal defense services by over $100 million, so we can take every possible measure to keep New Yorkers safe and demonstrate to everyone that they are welcomed in this city,” he declared.

In line with this goal, Mamdani has promised to boost the city’s legal department staff by 200, although he has not provided specifics.

Critics, however, find this proposal alarming. They argue that those seeking legal status have to cover their own legal costs and, since last year, have faced a $600 “asylum program fee” as part of the application process.

“Anyone in the US without status can face removal,” stated Candice Ackerman, an attorney for high-skilled immigrants.

The immigration situation has been escalating since 2022, and new arrivals may face deportation if they entered illegally or were convicted of a crime while in the country.

Since 2022, NYC has reportedly spent around $12 billion dealing with the asylum crisis.

“New York is in a financial crisis, and Mamdani is proposing to divert another $100 million to fund deportation defenses with taxpayer money, with no consideration for seniors, classrooms, or public safety,” a frustrated commentary mentioned.

“It’s simply unfair to taxpayers and those who’ve followed the rules to come here legally; enough is enough,” added Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Swa.

The source of the additional $100 million funding remains uncertain, and Mamdani’s campaign did not reply to inquiries regarding this matter.
