Trump declares National Guard sent to Portland during ICE protests

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump shared that the National Guard is being deployed in Portland, Oregon, as part of the administration’s effort to restore order amid ongoing protests tied to immigration enforcement issues.

In a recent post, he mentioned that he made the decision over the weekend to reactivate the Oregon National Guard, citing a “deteriorating situation” that he described as lawlessness. He expressed concern over the ability of federal law enforcement officers to maintain order, claiming that groups like Antifa and radical left anarchists have been acting against federal property and law enforcement.

Trump emphasized, “We will never let mobs take over our streets or burn down cities. The National Guard is committed to restoring law and order and putting an end to chaos.” He reiterated the idea that America is a nation of laws and expressed confidence in their mission.

A memo from the Oregon Military Department confirmed that 200 service members would be mobilized under the federal Title 10 directive to assist in the Portland area, as per requests from the Department of Defense. This initiative is primarily aimed at securing federal facilities and protecting federal employees.

Lieutenant General Alain R. Gróne Wald stressed the importance of understanding the mission’s command dynamics, acknowledging that there may be mixed feelings about the intervention. He noted that service members have a commitment beyond personal views; their duty is to uphold the Constitution and follow directives from the President and Governor.

In response to potential backlash, Gronewold advised troops to avoid discussing sensitive operational details on social media and to refrain from political debates while in uniform, emphasizing the importance of representing their larger mission.

Meanwhile, Portland Mayor Keith Wilson criticized Trump’s perceived plans and questioned the nature of lawlessness in the city. He pointed out that if the President visited, he would see citizens engaging in everyday activities like biking and shopping, rather than the chaos portrayed.

Recent months have seen significant protests near Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities, resulting in clashes and property damage. Gronewold acknowledged that while some may not support the National Guard’s involvement, their duty is crucial and goes beyond popularity.

Portland, known as a sanctuary city since 2017, has consistently resisted federal immigration enforcement, despite claims from officials that this undermines national interests. The city has not provided immediate comments regarding the recent developments.
