NJ police chief Christopher Battiloro criticizes family member charged with stalking and causing the deaths of two teenage girls in a hit-and-run.

The Chief of Police in New Jersey has found himself at the center of a tragic incident involving two teenage girls, who were mourned by their community after their deaths. Allegations have arisen that the Chief’s distant relatives were involved, with him being charged with double murder on Monday regarding the deaths of 17-year-olds Maria Niotis and Isabella Salas from Cranford.

In light of these events, Westfield Police Chief Christopher Batilloro has sought to separate himself from his relatives. He stated in a Facebook post that, despite social media making connections about the events, the accused is not part of his immediate family. “I want to be as loud and as clear as possible that I will never tolerate or excuse any behavior that has led to this tragic loss,” he expressed.

Niotis and Salas were reportedly riding their e-bikes when a driver in a black 2021 Jeep hit them around 5:30 PM on Monday, resulting in their deaths at the hospital shortly after. Batilloro expressed his shock and devastation, emphasizing that he had lost a neighbor in Isabella Salas, calling her a vibrant young woman.

After the tragic event, Batilloro and his officers attended the scene of the accident. Silence surrounded the Chief until charges were made against the 17-year-old suspect on Wednesday. He stressed the need for accountability and justice, emphasizing his faith in the legal system to address the situation appropriately.

A loved one shared that the suspect had been stalking one of the girls, who had even filed for a restraining order against him. It remains unclear which girl had taken that action. A friend, Tammy Carvajal, lamented that the complaint did not lead to any action, describing the whole situation as a tragedy.

Neighbors recounted troubling stories of the alleged stalker parking outside the girl’s home for three months prior to the incident. “He never stopped,” one neighbor remarked.

Batilloro expressed that his family is heartbroken over this senseless loss of life, which has shaken the sense of safety in their community. He reiterated his commitment to honor and integrity as he maintains his role as Chief, pledging support to his friends and neighbors during this painful time.

In a closing sentiment, he indicated that together, they would celebrate the lives of the young women and strive to overcome this horrific tragedy as a community.
