Broadview mayor opposes National Guard presence during ICE protests

Local Mayor Rejects National Guard Troops Amid Tensions

On Tuesday, the mayor of Broadview, a small town near Chicago, stated that her community does not want National Guard troops deployed in the area. This comes in response to recent tensions involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials and ongoing protests.

Mayor Katrina Thompson addressed the issue in a press conference, emphasizing that “we don’t want them here.” She argued that the town, which has a population of under 8,000, has been managing its own affairs effectively. “We don’t need them,” Thompson mentioned in an interview, reinforcing her stance that the community has been capable of self-governance thus far.

Her comments followed proposals from President Donald Trump, suggesting that the National Guard could assist in the Chicago area. Trump reportedly informed a military officer at Quantico Marine Base on Tuesday that troops would “go to Chicago soon.”

In related discussions, Chicago’s mayor has voiced concerns about “unstable people” needing to be screened before military resources are utilized in U.S. cities.

The Trump administration has previously sent national security forces to cities like Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., to address crime and assist in deportations. In Broadview, Thompson described the protesters as peaceful, noting that they were mostly subjected to verbal insults by ICE agents, despite some altercations.

Thompson remarked on her experiences, perhaps reflecting a broader sentiment: “It always happens to me and I don’t go out and throw tear gas at people,” she shared with a news outlet.

In response, ICE issued a statement indicating that the mayor has misrepresented the situation. They suggested that Thompson could either continue contributing to the ongoing problem or collaborate with law enforcement to enforce local laws and tackle violent offenders. “Mayor Thompson has distorted reality,” ICE stated, asserting that their officers are working to protect her community and others amidst rising violence, including issues surrounding the Broadview facility.
