Government Shutdown Blame Allocated to Schumer by Emmer
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) has recently stated that the ongoing government shutdown can be attributed to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY). Emmer suggested that Schumer is primarily concerned about losing his leadership role.
According to reports from Fox News, Emmer expressed, “The thing behind the shutdown is that there’s a man in the Senate, a scary old man who’s afraid of losing his leadership position, a guy in the Senate, in the name of Chuck Schumer.” He emphasized that this situation needs to be addressed.
Earlier in September, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton (R-AR) speculated in an interview that Schumer might be pushing for the government shutdown due to fears about left-wing representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). Cotton specifically remarked, “Chuck Schumer is shutting down the government because he fears the AOC primary. His actions are dishonorable.”
On another note, Schumer recently pointed fingers at President Donald Trump for the shutdown, claiming it stemmed from cuts in healthcare funding. However, Emmer countered that Schumer’s plans would actually expand Medicaid for over a million undocumented immigrants.
Emmer noted, “You have a law in this country that says that illegals can’t get Medicaid. But there was no verification tool to enforce it. We introduced this verification in the Tax Cuts for Workers’ Families Act, also known as the Big Beautiful Bill. The Congressional Budget Office estimated that maintaining these verifications could remove 1.4 million undocumented individuals from Medicaid.”
He continued, “What’s proposed in the Senate removes these verification requirements. That’s not what the American people want. It’s not in line with what Donald J. Trump has promised, nor the goals of House Republicans.”
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) confirmed that there is ongoing tension regarding government funding, particularly among Democrats who seek to provide medical care for undocumented individuals, according to Breitbart News.
In a social media post on Wednesday, Emmer commented, “Republicans vote to keep the government open in clean, nonpartisan CR. Democrats will shut down the government, endangering the livelihoods of millions of Americans, all while pushing radical agendas. Stop the political game, do your jobs, and resume government operations.”
Additionally, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) indicated that Democrats are likely to exploit the government shutdown to appease their left-leaning supporters.
