Leaders from a group backed by activist David Hogg announced support on Monday for a candidate challenging an incumbent in Michigan.
The organization is backing state legislator Donnavan McKinney (D) against incumbent Rep. Sri Taneder (D) in the Michigan Legislative District.
Hogg expressed his views, stating, “Shri Tandar hasn’t done much; he’s ineffective, and we need to remove him from office.” He criticized Taneder for what he sees as a failure in essential services and pointed out that nearly a million taxpayer dollars were spent on ads while not addressing core issues. “He just seems to be in it for the big checks after his time in office,” Hogg added, labeling Taneder as a poor representative for the Democrats.
In addition, Hogg’s group has also endorsed attorney Christian Menefy for Texas’s 18th Congressional District, Randy Vilgas in California’s 22nd Congressional District, and Akbar in Georgia’s congressional race.
The Texas 18th District is currently vacant following the late Rep. Sylvester Turner’s departure from the House earlier this year, with a special election set for November 4th.
This group gained attention earlier this year as part of their initiative to bring in a new wave of lawmakers, investing $20 million to support Democrats in key districts. Hogg has made it clear that they won’t focus on House Democrats facing tough re-election battles.
DNC Chair Ken Martin acknowledged Hogg’s leadership during a press briefing, calling him a “surprising young leader” and expressing high regard for him.
Earlier this year, Hogg stepped back from the DNC after choosing not to participate in a re-evaluation of election procedures concerning gender diversity.
