Trump’s Military Missteps in American Cities
One of my proudest moments? It was when I first put on my uniform, laced up my boots, and took an oath to the Constitution as part of the Illinois Army National Guard. I truly valued every day I was able to wake up and identify myself as an American soldier. That’s why I can’t stay silent when a person who has dodged the draft multiple times attempts to manipulate our military for his own gain.
Last week, in Quantico, President Donald Trump expressed his desire to turn American cities into “training grounds” for the military. This is the same president who recently suggested renaming the Pentagon as the “Department of the Army.” It’s concerning to see the commander-in-chief propose that his forces train against the very citizens they’re meant to protect. Just last month, he provocatively remarked that Chicago would soon “understand why it’s dubbed the Department of War.” This threat materialized when he sent hundreds of National Guard troops into the city.
It’s important to grasp what’s happening here. Trump is pushing an agenda by fabricating narratives of chaos and violence on our streets, justifying the need for military presence against the wishes of local governments. First, he sent troops to Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., and now Portland is next on his list. Yet, his attempts to deploy forces have been obstructed by a federal judge—appointed by Trump himself—who stated that the reasons given for military intervention were “not connected to the facts.”
Essentially, it’s clear he’s misleading the public.
Recently, Chicago has witnessed troubling actions by Trump’s operatives: innocent citizens have been detained, legal representation has been denied, and there have been reports of excessive force, including fatal shootings. It’s evident that Trump targets cities that push back against him, labeling him for who he really is—a leader with no moral compass and questionable intentions.
This isn’t just about blue cities either. If we let this trend continue, there’s nothing to prevent Trump—or any future president—from taking similar actions elsewhere, regardless of the justification.
To be explicit: ordering military presence to intimidate the very people they are sworn to protect does nothing to enhance our safety. The role of the National Guard isn’t to police American communities. They lack the training for urban law enforcement. These deployments smother civil rights and distracts the military from its real mission of safeguarding our country.
Let’s face it—Trump isn’t genuinely focused on “law and order.” Rather than disconnecting from local authorities, he should coordinate with them. He’s prioritizing his personal agenda at the expense of our brave military members, who are instead left to clean up and stand idle rather than focusing on national defense.
Meanwhile, President Trump is squandering taxpayer money, creating fear among law-abiding residents exercising their rights. He’s redirecting federal resources that should be utilized to combat serious issues like drug trafficking and terrorism.
Just today, as I drove to work, I saw National Guard members mobilized, and I felt a twinge of sympathy for them. They didn’t pledge to serve just to bolster the ego of someone who dodged responsibility himself.
These service members are oath-bound to protect free speech—not to suppress it. They willingly risked their lives for this nation—not to prop up an individual’s standing.
Cities like Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Portland, and Chicago didn’t ask for this intervention. Our service members deserve better. I refuse to sit back as they are humiliated and misused by someone who has never known the true meaning of sacrifice.
Though I’m no longer in uniform, I still proudly showcase my military service in my Senate office. Now I spend my days in the Capitol, working to keep this country as strong and safe as it should be. I just wish Trump would do the same.
