Protest Rally in New York City Showcases Support for Mayoral Candidate Mamdani
Manhattan, New York – Attendees at the “No Kings” rally in Times Square on Saturday expressed a clear preference for mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani, indicating they want him to safeguard New York City from President Donald Trump’s influence.
Across the U.S., millions gathered to voice their opposition to Trump’s potential second-term initiatives. With the election just around the corner, voters in New York City took to the streets to share their reasons for backing Mamdani in the mayoral race.
“He’s everything they are not,” remarked Edgar, a voter from Rockaway Beach, Queens, when asked about Mamdani. He emphasized that New York City requires leaders akin to California Governor Gavin Newsom, who actively counters the Trump administration, as he feels democracy is “under attack.”
Final stage: Cuomo’s resurgence complicates the mayoral race
Mamdani himself has commended Newsom’s assertive stance against Trump, particularly during protests when the National Guard was deployed to Los Angeles to prevent unrest during Trump’s presidency.
In contrast, Trump has sent the National Guard to various cities such as Washington, D.C., and Chicago as part of his crime-fighting measures.
“He’s definitely not afraid of Trump,” said Gail Kelly, an attorney from Breezy Point, Queens, who plans to vote for Mamdani. She expressed her distaste for former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who lost to Mamdani in June’s Democratic primary and is now running as an independent. Kelly conveyed her indifference towards Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
New poll shows Mamdani maintaining a lead
Another supporter, Brad from Gowanus, Brooklyn, was also incensed by both Trump and Cuomo, labeling them “fascists.” However, he admitted to uncertainty regarding Mamdani’s ideas, saying, “He may not have many solid plans, but his optimism and concern for New Yorkers is significant.”
Regardless of the controversies surrounding Cuomo, whose administration faced multiple sexual harassment allegations, a campaign spokesperson defended him by highlighting past achievements such as raising the minimum wage and supporting marriage equality.
Saturday’s rally and its impact
Amid the crowd, Annelis Morales from Manhattan’s Upper East Side praised Mamdani’s refreshing transparency. “I think leaders like Cuomo have been in power too long, corrupting the system,” Morales shared. Anticipating a vigorous response from Mamdani towards Trump, she feels his message resonates with the material needs of New Yorkers.
Rennie, a Lower East Side resident, plans to vote for Mamdani and suggested, “Following the law is all he needs to do; it’s pretty straightforward.”
According to a recent Fox News poll, Mamdani currently leads with 49% support, significantly ahead of Cuomo at 28% and Sliwa at 13%.
As Election Day approaches on November 4, voters at the “No Kings” rally expressed their strong intentions to support Mamdani, although the candidate himself was not visibly present at the event.
Senator Bernie Sanders also takes part
Senator Bernie Sanders, a vocal supporter of Mamdani, organized a similar “No Kings” rally in Washington, D.C., on the same day, while inquiries to the White House for comments on the event have gone unanswered.
