Kennedy and Hines Seen Flying Economy

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife, actress Cheryl Hines, were recently spotted flying in economy class on a commercial airline, which has sparked a wave of positive reactions online.

A video shared on TikTok showed the couple navigating through the airport, where they were escorted separately and then took their seats among other passengers in economy. It’s kind of refreshing, honestly, to see someone in their position opting for a more relatable travel experience.

Supporters on social media drew comparisons to politicians like New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders, who have recently been criticized for flying private jets to their events. One user noted the contradiction, mentioning, “Meanwhile, Bernie and AOC are flying on private jets because they ‘have to fight billionaires,'” which really raises eyebrows, doesn’t it?

Video footage from a recent event captured AOC and Sanders stepping off a Bombardier Challenger 604, a private jet that, by the way, costs between $5 million to $7 million. This kind of charters easily rack up charges of around $15,000 per hour. It’s puzzling—how can they advocate for the average person while traveling in such luxury?

Both Kennedy and Hines’s choice to fly economy seems to resonate with a public that is increasingly aware of these inconsistencies. The politicians are currently traveling to various rallies aimed at “engaging in serious debate across America” and addressing the “oligarchic and corporate interests” at play, as their campaign messaging suggests.

A study mentioned in Nature magazine Communication, Earth & Environment highlights the environmental impact, noting the Bombardier Challenger exhausts around 365 gallons of fuel every 1.32 hours, which, when you think about it, is pretty staggering. Regular private jet users reportedly contribute 500 times more carbon dioxide emissions annually compared to the average global citizen. It definitely makes you reconsider the phrase “do as I say, not as I do.”

There have been issues in the past, too. Former HHS Secretary Tom Price faced backlash for using chartered flights during his term, costing taxpayers over a million dollars on international travel before he resigned amid federal investigations. It seems like just yesterday all this was in the news, but here we are with another example of government travel habits raising eyebrows.

The Department of Health didn’t respond to inquiries for clarification regarding Kennedy’s trip, which leaves us with more questions than answers. Just how transparent are these trips, really?
