Political Turmoil for Maine Democrats
Graham Platner, a Senate candidate with Nazi tattoos, isn’t the only one in hot water among Maine Democrats.
Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine) is facing significant challenges as he aims to hold onto his seat in 2026. Recent polling indicates he’s in a tight race, with former Republican Governor Paul LePage leading at 49 percent compared to Golden’s 44 percent. This makes Golden a prime target for Republican campaign groups.
Furthermore, his favorability ratings are slipping, now two points lower than his primary challenger, Matt Dunlap. Just a month prior to Dunlap’s entry into the race, Golden’s approval was barely ahead.
Recent surveys suggest the incumbent’s support is waning, particularly in rural regions. Republicans are taking notice, celebrating these signs of trouble. A spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee remarked that Golden’s shifts in position are catching up with him, implying that there’s a growing desire for change among Mainers.
Another Republican spokesperson argued that “no one likes Jared Golden,” suggesting he should resign to maintain some credibility.
Golden is among 13 House Democrats in districts that Trump won in 2024, and additional concerns arise since LePage has triumphed in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District during all his prior gubernatorial campaigns.
A recent poll indicating LePage’s lead surfaced just before news broke about Platner’s controversial tattoo, which has likely damaged his standing. Although Platner managed to secure a dominant 58% support against Gov. Janet Mills in the Democratic primary, the distraction from the tattoo scandal could also hinder Golden and fellow Democrats in the state.
This latest polling data was gathered by the University of New Hampshire Research Center.
