State Department Supports Israel in Response to ICJ's 'Unfair Decision' on UNRWA

On Wednesday, the U.S. State Department expressed support for Israel regarding a ruling from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that mandates Israel to work with United Nations agencies for Gaza’s post-war reconstruction.

This ruling, which carries only “advisory” weight, was a response to a query from the United Nations General Assembly, predominantly made up of anti-Israel members. The ruling dismissed Israeli fears about the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which is dedicated to Palestinian issues, being compromised by Hamas and accused of promoting terrorism against Israel while fostering anti-Israel sentiments among Palestinians.

(ICJ Vice-President Julia Sebutinde, from Uganda, was the sole dissenter, expressing that the court did not adequately address the security concerns highlighted by host nations, particularly regarding the claim that Hamas operatives have infiltrated UNRWA, thereby questioning the organization’s neutrality.)

Israel rejected the ruling, with the U.S. State Department labeling it yet another “unjust” verdict from the ICJ.

The ICJ also permitted Palestinians to present allegations of “genocide,” despite there being little evidence to support such claims. While no formal judgment has been made that genocide took place, it is often misrepresented as if it had been conclusively determined.

During his first term, President Trump cut funding to UNRWA, a decision that President Biden reversed before October 7. However, Trump later reinstated the cut, opting to support the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, an independent organization that collaborates with the Israeli government and private military contractors to deliver aid directly to Palestinians without the risk of Hamas interference.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is currently in Israel alongside Vice President J.D. Vance, special envoy Stephen Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law. While expressing support for Israel, Rubio cautioned against endorsing a bill that would annex land in Judea and Samaria (West Bank), suggesting it could complicate the ongoing peace initiatives spearheaded by the U.S.
