Housing Reassessment Updates in Lucas County
TOLEDO, Ohio – Lucas County is working on correcting issues within its housing reassessment process. There are current efforts to inform locals about various available savings credits.
Some of these discounts are particularly aimed at seniors. While they won’t cover all tax expenses, they certainly can provide some relief.
Lillian Truss recently enjoyed a bus trip instead of attending a meeting about the homestead exemption at the Margaret Hunt Senior Center. This tax has appeared on her bills since a colleague informed her about it back in 2006.
“She asked if I knew about the Homestead program. I said, ‘No,’ and she handed me the paperwork, which I mailed in,” Truss recalled.
After being accepted, her home’s value was reduced by roughly $28,000 as her age and income were verified. This exemption is available for older homeowners facing rising property values and taxes.
Lucas County Auditor Katie Moline mentioned, “People are generally aware of this tax relief, especially now with real estate prices increasing, and we also provide the resources to obtain that relief.” Moline’s office has been actively engaging with the community to explain these tax credits.
Toledo resident Ruth Jacobs, who admitted she hadn’t learned about these opportunities until last year, intends to apply for the exemption to help her financially.
The upcoming 2024 property valuations are likely to see an increase across Lucas County, leading many residents to challenge their property values. This process is expected to yield around $4.5 million in refunds for those who successfully appeal their valuations.
“We’ve done well in keeping the public informed about their rights to contest property values if there’s a discrepancy,” Moline added.
Jacobs encouraged others to register for the exemption, saying, “You really gain nothing by not checking. Even if you’re unsure about your previous tax amounts, it’s worth it.”
Truss, reflecting on the awareness of these benefits, said, “I think some might need a nudge to realize it’s important, but once they do, I believe they’ll connect the dots.”
In addition, there’s a property tax credit for owner occupancy that many receive when selling a home, so it’s a good idea to review your tax bill to ensure you’ve received that credit.
