Nelly Furtado Takes a Break from Performing
Nelly Furtado has decided to pause her music performances. The Grammy-winning artist shared this news on social media, citing recent incidents of body shaming online as a significant factor in her decision.
In an Instagram post, which also marked the 25th anniversary of her debut album “Whoa, Nelly!”, she expressed, “I’ve chosen to step away from performing for now and focus on other creative and personal projects that feel right for this next chapter of my life.”
The Canadian singer, celebrated for early hits such as “I’m Like a Bird” and “Promiscuous”, reflected on her career with a hint of nostalgia. She recalled, “Twenty-five years ago today, my first album was released. At 20, I was gearing up for my first show at Lilith Fair. I remember purchasing a pink dress and sparkly shoes for that performance. It was a defining moment for me as an artist.”
Furtado added, “After 25 years, my music has found new fans. That brings me so much joy.” She voiced her gratitude, especially noting how streaming services and social media have helped her music reach fresh audiences.
This announcement follows her earlier confrontations with online critics regarding her fashion choices during Manchester Pride, where she responded positively to criticism, promoting self-acceptance among her followers.
During the festival, Furtado wore a notable oversized T-shirt featuring a cartoon image that seemed to subtly challenge body shaming. She has also mentioned addressing online scammers misusing her name for profit.
Nelly, who spoke about her stance against cosmetic surgery, emphasized that her glow comes from a simple skin care routine rather than any cosmetic procedures. “I’ve never had any injections or fillers; just good skincare,” she remarked.
