Jake Tapper Argues With Democratic Representative Who Attributes Potential Food Aid Freeze to Trump Administration

Potential Government Shutdown and SNAP Funding at Risk

CNN host Jake Tapper questioned Democratic Representative Melanie Stansbury of New Mexico on whether Democrats should push to reopen the government to safeguard food assistance for Americans.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which aids over 40 million Americans, is set to lose funding on November 1 unless Congress intervenes. Tapper accused the Trump administration of enabling Democrats to end the government shutdown during Stansbury’s appearance on “Lead with Jake Tapper.”

“Should Democratic senators from New Mexico vote to reopen the government so that these SNAP funds remain secure?” he asked.

“Let me be clear: this administration is choosing to starve American children with money that has already been allocated,” Stansbury stated. “This is a choice made by the White House.”

Tapper challenged her assertion, saying, “Congressman, this is also the decision of Senate Democrats not to vote to reopen the government.” Stansbury interjected, insisting, “No, it’s not!”

“Yes, that’s correct!” Tapper replied. “I understand their motivations, though—they’re seeking Medicaid funding reinstated, and they want Obamacare premiums extended past the end of the year.”

Stansbury contended that the Trump administration might continue SNAP funding even amidst the shutdown. Tapper acknowledged that possibility but emphasized it would only be a temporary fix. He pointed out that while some seemed to imply he didn’t care about Americans losing food aid, he clarified, “What I’m saying is it’s a short-term solution.”

Stansbury responded, “That doesn’t matter! People need to feed their families, and that money runs out on Saturday.”

Tapper suggested that if Stansbury was really concerned, he should encourage his party to reopen the government. “If you feel so strongly about it, why not ask your Democratic senator from New Mexico to vote to open the government?” he inquired.

Stansbury replied, “I’m in the House, where it’s closed. I’m fighting to get the government reopened, to restore SNAP funding. I’m here for the American people. But I don’t see any Republicans here to ensure Americans are fed on Saturday.”

Earlier in the discussion, Stansbury claimed that the Trump administration was prioritizing building a banquet hall and travel over helping Americans in need. She emphasized, “We’re literally four days away from 42 million Americans losing food assistance because the White House is spending $300 million on a banquet hall and cutting off food aid.”

Stansbury warned that this could lead to dire consequences for seniors, children, veterans, and many other Americans.

Senate Democrats have consistently blocked efforts led by Republicans to reopen the government and maintain food assistance for millions, rejecting funding legislation that involves compromises like extending Obamacare subsidies.
