Bodega owners' representative urges struggling New Yorkers not to steal after SNAP benefits end: 'They might get shot'

Representatives for bodega owners in New York City are urging residents facing financial difficulties to stay calm and refrain from visiting local Loop stores, especially as SNAP benefits could run out amid the ongoing federal shutdown.

Fernando Mateo, who recently announced his plan to establish a new bodega organization, expressed concerns about potential looting. He warned that if disturbances occurred, there could be danger for both store owners and those in need of food.

“When people are hungry and out of options, they might feel compelled to do whatever it takes to feed their families,” Mateo noted on Thursday.

He highlighted fears around violence if looting happens, suggesting that store workers or owners trying to intervene could face serious harm. “That’s the situation we want to avoid,” he added.

Mateo’s comments came as he launched a new “Bodega Alliance,” shortly after resigning from the United Bodega of America, citing conflicts over support for Zoran Mamdani.

He shared feelings of betrayal regarding Radames Rodríguez, the president of United Bodegas of America, who had backed a progressive candidate for mayor promising to establish city-run grocery stores in all five boroughs.

The newly formed group plans to coordinate with the NYPD to maintain order if SNAP benefits expire on Saturday.

Mateo advised those in need to consider asking local bodega owners for help, instead of resorting to theft.

“If you know a local bodega, don’t hesitate to ask for food and supplies; the owner will likely help you out,” he suggested, expressing confidence that they would navigate this together.

The situation centers around the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food stamp program, which assists over 42 million Americans but is set to conclude on November 1, with a protracted standoff in Congress causing continuous government shutdowns.

With frustration mounting, many Americans have taken to social media to threaten widespread shoplifting, raising alarms for both small stores and larger national retailers.
