Clooney Critiques Harris’ Candidacy
George Clooney, the Hollywood actor and Democratic supporter, expressed his belief that it was a “mistake” for Kamala Harris to step in for President Biden in the upcoming election. This follows his public call last summer for Biden to reconsider his re-election bid.
In an interview with CBS News Sunday Morning, Clooney indicated he has no regrets about his previous op-ed in the New York Times that suggested the former president should resign due to concerns about age, health, and a low re-election likelihood.
When asked if he would pen another similar piece, Clooney affirmed, saying, “Yes.” He noted the importance of holding a primary and testing the waters quickly.
However, he voiced concerns about Harris as a candidate. “I think Kamala’s mistake is that she had to run against her record, and if the purpose of running is to say, ‘I’m not that person,’ that’s very difficult,” he remarked, adding that she faced a demanding challenge.
Clooney was among the early voices urging Biden to resign, a call that eventually led to the president stepping back from the race to support Harris. Following that, Clooney thanked Biden for what he described as “saving democracy again.”
In a recent discussion, Clooney indicated a preference for Harris over others, even if she faces a tough battle against Trump. “They say we’re going to lose more House seats. So, you know, I don’t know,” he commented, hinting at potential electoral challenges.
Hunter Biden, the president’s son, responded critically to Clooney’s previous statements regarding his father. Clooney acknowledged Hunter’s remarks, but suggested many were based on untruths. Yet, he also emphasized that dwelling on the past isn’t beneficial for anyone, including Hunter or the Democratic Party. “I just wish him well. I hope he does well, and I’ll leave it at that,” Clooney added, expressing his desire to avoid public disputes.
