Rapper expresses gratitude to Trump for supporting Nigerian Christians; president vows to 'totally eliminate' their jihadist attackers.

Nigeria is experiencing rapid growth, with a population exceeding 239 million. Data from 2018 indicates that about 53.5% identify as Muslim, while approximately 45.9% are Christian. Despite having a Christian population of over 100 million, these individuals endure severe persecution at the hands of Islamic extremists.

Former President Donald Trump, while campaigning for the 2024 election, expressed his commitment to support persecuted Christians. Recently, he signaled that the violent perpetrators targeting Christians in Nigeria could expect a response from the U.S. military.

The Nigerian government condemned Trump’s remarks, yet some nations and notable figures have welcomed his focus on the ongoing issues. Notably, rapper Nicki Minaj expressed gratitude towards Trump for his stance.

Background

According to a Christian persecution monitoring group, Nigeria ranks as the seventh worst country for Christians globally. The report highlights that Christians are frequently targeted by Islamic extremists, including groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province).

From October 2022 to September 2023, over 4,100 Christians were reported killed due to their faith, averaging around 11 deaths per day. There were also more than 3,300 kidnappings of Nigerian Christians during that period, and things seem to have worsened since.

A report from August indicates that in the first half of the year alone, more than 7,000 Christians were violently killed by Fulani fighters and other jihadists.

Some experts caution against broadly categorizing the violent actions of the Fulani herdsmen with other Islamist factions, suggesting their motives may also relate to economic factors, alongside religious ones.

Jeff King, an expert on religious persecution, noted earlier this year that, much like Boko Haram, Fulani extremists are driven by a desire to expand their influence and claim territory for Islam, seeking to reestablish historical caliphates.

The situation has reportedly worsened since Bola Ahmed Tinubu took office as Nigeria’s president in 2023.

Take Action

In response to deteriorating conditions for Christians, Congressman Riley Moore and others have urged the U.S. government, specifically the Trump administration, to intervene. Moore emphasized that over 50,000 Christians have died and more than five million have been displaced since the beginning of the Boko Haram insurgency in 2009.

Moore highlighted recent tragic events, including the kidnapping and murder of a priest on Ash Wednesday and the martyrdom of 54 Christians on Palm Sunday. He also pointed out that in the last decade, at least 250 priests have been either attacked or killed.

Moore has called for the designation of Nigeria as a country of particular concern regarding religious freedom issues. The U.S. government appears to share his concerns, as indicated by recent actions from the administration.

Trump announced plans to apply the designation and asked for immediate investigations into these matters. He expressed concern about the existential crisis facing Christianity in Nigeria, stressing the need for action as thousands have been lost to violence.

This designation is significant, as it could lead to economic and diplomatic repercussions for Nigeria. Previously, the Trump administration had placed this designation on Nigeria, but the Biden administration removed it.

Nicki Minaj commended Trump’s actions, expressing appreciation for the freedom of worship in the United States and urging recognition of the global issue of religious persecution.

In response to the designation, Congressman Moore and others stated that the U.S. stands firm against such violence and that allowing it to continue is unacceptable. They view this as a crucial step in addressing the extremism problem.

Trump indicated that if the Nigerian government failed to protect Christians, the U.S. might withdraw aid and potentially intervene with military force. He stated he would direct the Army to prepare for possible action, warning Nigeria to act swiftly.

Nervousness in Nigeria’s capital is palpable following Trump’s statements, while President Tinubu maintained that Nigeria is a democratic nation committed to protecting religious freedom.

In Tinubu’s defense, he reiterated that claims of religious intolerance do not accurately portray Nigeria’s realities or its government’s commitment to religious freedom. He emphasized that promoting and safeguarding these principles is central to the nation’s identity.
