Kenneth Rapoza: Now That the Gaza Agreement Is Finalized and the Asia Trip Is Completed, It's Time for Trump to Focus Internally, or Risk Consequences

Trump’s Focus Needs to Shift Back to Domestic Issues

It’s essential for Trump to recall what drove voters to support him in the first place. This is about prioritizing America rather than chasing after international accolades or attempting to mediate foreign disputes. It certainly isn’t about hosting lavish events while everyday citizens grapple with rising living costs.

Supporters of Trump are voicing strong opinions, urging him to reconnect with his populist-nationalist roots. He wasn’t brought into office to be a president concentrated on foreign matters. That’s not the Trump they desire.

Now that the Gaza agreement is signed and his Asian tour wrapped up, it may be time to refocus on domestic issues.

Trump seems weary of discussions about Israel, Ukraine, or trying to encourage China—again—to increase soybean purchases and not sell chemicals for illicit drugs. Rich Barris, also known as “The People’s Pundit,” recently remarked that the consensus suggests too much emphasis is being placed on foreign policy while domestic concerns are being overlooked. He warned that if this bubble isn’t burst soon, it might be too late.

Barris’ public opinion surveys reveal that those who voted for Trump favor an America First approach over traditional Republican values. Pew Research highlights that around half of those surveyed support Trump but show little interest in global affairs. He is currently experiencing his lowest popularity ratings since January.

Shifting focus to domestic concerns could prove beneficial.

Prioritizing Trade Issues

Trump’s Asian trip was an aspect of his trade agenda, which is fundamentally tied to his domestic objectives. Unfortunately, undoing previous U.S. policies favoring foreign investments and outsourcing takes time.

Although an America First trade policy won’t eliminate every problem—like inflated health insurance costs and surging utility prices—it’s intended to revitalize American manufacturing, something Trump needs to emphasize more clearly. He must communicate progress on his trade initiatives.

Recent shifts in employment suggest positive changes; rather than boosting production in Canada or Mexico, companies are increasingly hiring in Indiana. Although technology layoffs continue, jobs in the auto industry in Indiana are on the rise, projecting promising growth.

According to the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, Indiana’s auto sector contributes significantly to tax revenue and sustains hundreds of thousands of jobs. Without the America First approach, it’s likely these jobs would shift to Mexico.

Trump has also done away with the e-commerce tax exemption, a measure that retailers appreciate. This move potentially saves jobs at major retailers, which indicates ongoing investment in the U.S.

Apple recently announced plans to invest $500 billion in the U.S. over the next four years, including building a new factory in Houston and furthering domestic partnerships for parts manufacturing. This reinvestment in the U.S. supply chain is closely tied to Trump’s policies.

While businesses have always been investing domestically, there’s a strong belief that such significant shifts wouldn’t occur without an America First trade policy.

This year, the Trump administration has initiated numerous new investigations to drive domestic investment, although currently only a few tariffs are in place. Those are expected to increase.

The Cost of Living Dilemma

The rising cost of living continues to be a pressing issue, with tariffs often unfairly blamed. Recent reports covering job reductions at major companies suggest that various factors, including sales lag and changes in inflation laws, may be at fault.

The increasing cost of services and taxes contributes to overall household expenses, and some local governments seem to avoid accountability by blaming federal policies.

Trump has made a pivotal commitment to reduce dependence on China and restore industrial capacity, thereby improving the livelihoods of blue-collar workers. This vision reflects the core tenets of the America First philosophy.

Unless Trump and his network can effectively articulate these points, Democrats might exploit the narrative around the cost of living to regain control in Congress. The implications could be significant.
