Motorist Deliberately Runs Over Pedestrians and Cyclists
Authorities report that a motorist deliberately struck pedestrians and cyclists, shouting “Allahu Akbar.” Among the injured is a prominent political activist from the National Assembly, currently in critical condition.
This type of attack, often labeled as “Islamist” or “jihadist,” has now reached “La France Profonde,” or deep France, injuring at least ten people when a man drove his car into unsuspecting civilians on the peaceful island known for its fishing villages.
On Wednesday morning, a driver targeted civilians on Île d’Oleron, located in the Bay of Biscay near Rochefort. Of the injured, four are reported to be in serious condition, including a political aide affiliated with Marine Le Pen’s National Rally Party, who was notably injured while jogging and had to be airlifted to the hospital.
Update: Two Individuals in Critical Condition
Initial reports indicated four individuals were in critical condition following the attack, but the number has since been revised to two. During a visit to Île d’Oleron, France’s interior minister mentioned that the suspect, currently in custody, is not providing much information, but that an investigation, including a search of his home, is underway.
A 35-year-old suspect has been apprehended. Police noted that he was already known for minor offenses and drug-related activities. Although a case for attempted murder has been opened, the motives behind his actions remain unclear despite him shouting during his arrest.
“When he was taken into custody, he said ‘Allah Akbar,'” a local prosecutor noted. However, the exact motives are still under investigation, and counter-terrorism police are involved but not leading the inquiry at this stage.
Moreover, it’s been reported that the vehicle used in the attack was set ablaze by the perpetrator as he attempted to escape on foot, with multiple gas cylinders found inside, hinting at a potential intent to cause an explosion. This detail has not been confirmed by police at this time.
Conservative voices and politicians have expressed their outrage over the incident, emphasizing the alarming spread of what they term “Islamist terrorism” even into France’s more tranquil regions. Eric Zemmour, a political essayist and former presidential candidate, remarked, “Just a few years ago, places like Île d’Oleron were havens for those looking to live in a preserved France. Now, jihadists seem to be emerging everywhere.”
Jordan Bardera, parliamentary leader of the National Rally Party, stressed the need for severe consequences for those involved in this “blind and deliberate violence.” He and fellow MP Sébastien Chenu both highlighted the pervasive threat now faced across the nation, urging a collective fight against the “Islamist hydra.” Bardera asserted, “The threat of Islamism is greater than ever. We must confront this war here and now. Our country has already endured significant losses due to Islamist extremism.”
