White House Criticism of Press Coverage on Inflation
On Friday, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt expressed her dissatisfaction with the press corps, accusing them of neglecting to report on President Donald Trump’s initiatives aimed at making goods more affordable for American citizens.
During a discussion about the significant inflation rates not seen in nearly fifty years under the Biden administration, Trump invited Levitt to address questions from reporters regarding affordability. He described one claim made during the discussion as “false and hateful.”
Levitt remarked, “It’s very unfortunate that the reporters in this room refused to address what you just said, which is that we inherited the worst inflation crisis in modern American history and are trying to resolve it in a short 10-month period.”
She added that multiple government departments, including the Treasury Department and the Department of Agriculture, are working to tackle this issue by reducing regulations.
Before criticizing journalists, Levitt highlighted that President Trump has been delivering tax cuts for middle-class families through “one big, beautiful bill.” She emphasized, “So affordability is what the American people elected this president to do, and he’s doing it, and yet you’re refusing to cover it.” She also pointed out that the previous administration contributed to the current insolvency crisis.
Indeed, President Trump has achieved certain milestones. He has signed contracts with five major pharmaceutical companies aimed at significantly reducing the costs of essential prescription medications. The Trump RX website is set to launch in January, which will feature reduced prices for drugs like Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic and Wegoby, now offered at about $350 a month compared to previous prices of $1,000 and $1,350.
Additionally, egg prices have reportedly decreased by 85% since March, in contrast to a 147% increase recorded from the beginning of the Biden administration to August 2024, just before Trump’s substantial election victory.
In grocery news, Walmart’s Thanksgiving Set, which serves ten, retails for just under $40. This cost is notably lower than the $7 per person average for meals last year, making it more accessible this season.
Interest rates have been reduced twice during the Trump administration by a quarter of a point, now ranging from 3.75% to 4%. As Trump noted on Wednesday, the typical cost for a new mortgage stands at $3,000 annually. Furthermore, prices for various grocery items, including butter, ice cream, cereal, and fresh fruits, have also seen declines.
Levitt concluded with, “Wages are rising at the fastest pace in 60 years.”
