Police Chief Calls for Action Against Repeat Offender

The police chief in New Mexico has shared a video appealing to the public to express their concerns about a man repeatedly released by the courts despite a history of violent offenses.

Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Storey stated that Neil Garcia is linked to a series of serious crimes but has been deemed incompetent to stand trial, leading to his release.

“I would argue that he poses a clear danger to the public and the community,” Storey commented, noting that victims are simply trying to lead normal lives.

In his three-minute video, Storey highlighted several incidents involving Garcia. For instance, in 2022, Garcia allegedly threatened and assaulted a security guard during a shoplifting incident. The following year, he reportedly attacked employees at Dollar General and Lowe’s Fiesta Foods while attempting to steal. Not to mention, in 2024, he even tried to strike two individuals with a golf club after a theft at Harbor Freight. And in 2025, he allegedly punched a Walmart employee caught stealing.

In addition, in June, Garcia faced charges for breaking a window at City Hall; however, a judge ruled him “incompetent and not dangerous,” resulting in his release.

Storey reiterated his concerns, saying, “The people he is victimizing are simply trying to live their lives.” He noted that Garcia has been arrested over 108 times, with at least 15 of those being felonies.

Currently held on robbery charges, recent information indicates that federal authorities have intervened in his case. In a statement, Storey mentioned this intervention was a direct consequence of his video, involving a collaboration between the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and he plans to provide updates soon.

Details regarding the specific federal charges against Garcia remain unclear.

Storey also pointed out that Garcia’s situation isn’t unique, emphasizing the need for systemic change. He mentioned that the District Attorney’s Office sought involuntary treatment options, which the court denied. “This isn’t an exception; unfortunately, it’s the norm,” he emphasized.
