Newsom Criticized for Energy Costs Amid Trump Administration Blame

California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, attempted to criticize the increasing energy costs during the Trump administration but faced backlash highlighting California’s own high electricity prices.

In a social media update on Tuesday, Newsom attributed the rising energy prices to President Trump’s skepticism on climate change. At the COP30 climate change conference in Brazil, he strongly condemned Federal policies related to the environment.

Critics quickly pointed out that California lacks the credibility to comment on national energy prices. For example, Cory Wooden, a director for the California Republican Party, noted, “Electricity rates have surged by 64% since 2020, largely due to Newsom’s push for ‘green’ energy, which has driven away investments in more affordable electricity.” He added that Newsom and the Democratic Party have lost credibility on affordability issues.

Congressman Vince Fung (R-Calif.) remarked, “Newsom is advocating for ineffective energy policies in Brazil, which contribute to Californians facing some of the highest gas and electricity rates nationally.” He emphasized that California’s reliance on foreign oil has only grown, with imports from Brazil now comprising 20% of the state’s supply.

Congressman Ken Calvert (R-Calif.) expressed skepticism about Newsom’s credibility on energy affordability, pointing out that under his leadership, California faces the highest electricity rates in the contiguous United States, along with the highest gas prices.

Responses from observers included doubts about the effectiveness and sincerity of Newsom’s climate change commitments amidst these criticisms. One commentator, Taylor Rogers, stated, “It’s hypocritical for him to discuss energy prices while Californians are paying the highest rates in the country.”

Newsom seems to be positioning himself as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election by criticizing Trump. He previously claimed California as the leader of the anti-Trump resistance after the latter’s reelection.

Apart from energy costs, California faces criticism for its management of the energy grid, which has been linked to destructive wildfires.
